Hydrogen-driven Hybrid Busses take up Regular Service / Heralds of Fuel Cell Technology

Hürth, September 8, 2011 – Two hydrogen-driven fuel cell hybrid busses have successfully finished a four-month test period. The 18 meter articulated busses named “Phileas” will now take up regular public transport service on inner-city and regional lines in the Rhein-Erft county for the first time. The cities of Hürth and Brühl will be the core areas of the traffic service offering.

New Members within the HyCologne Network: CHEMPARK and IHK Köln

In May, the first hydrogen filling station in the Cologne region will start operation. In a 1st phase it will supply fuel to regular public bus lines. The new technology is supported and promoted by a network formed by industrial and political partners, who have united to create a so-called “cluster” under the name of HyCologne. By now, it has 20 members. The last newcomers are CHEMPARK and the Cologne Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK Köln).

Hürth will have 1st Hydrogen filling station in the Cologne region

“By starting the ‘Chemergy’ project, we will enter a new hydrogen world,” assures Dr. Albrecht Möllmann, president of ‘HyCologne – Wasserstoff Region Rheinland e.V.’ “Because the project will create a modular filling station exactly where hydrogen is produced.” This location situated directly at Chemiepark Hürth is a first step in the Cologne region to use hydrogen produced in the chemical industry to drive vehicles.

“Fuel Cell Box“ students awards in North Rhine Westphalia

In 2008 and 2009 HyCologne sponsored the NRW-based contest, in which more than 200 school teams took part, both morally and financially. The “Fuel Cell Box" contest is meant to familiarize school students with the technologies of the future: hydrogen and fuel cells.
